What is Naturopathic Medicine?

According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, Naturopathic medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability. Naturopathic doctors (NDs, NMDs) teach their patients to use diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and cutting edge natural therapies to enhance their bodies' ability to ward off and combat disease. [A Naturopathic Doctor views the patient as a whole person, not solely as a symptom, diagnosis, or individual physiological system.] Naturopathic physicians put together comprehensive treatment plans that blend the best of modern medical science and traditional natural medical approaches to not only treat disease, but to also restore health,” and in doing so prevent disease and bring the body to a state of optimal wellness. This form of healing and prevention is based on the following six principles that are at the core of our profession:

Naturopathic Principles

  • First Do No Harm - Using the least invasive and least toxic therapies available, derived from the most natural compounds
  • The Healing Power of Nature - The body has an inherent wisdom to heal itself if we give it the right tools.
  • Identify and Treat the Causes - Symptoms may help in identifying the diagnosis, but we do not simply treat symptoms, we fins the underlying cause and treat that.
  • Doctor as Teacher - We educate patients in taking the necessary steps to achieve and maintain optimal health.
  • Treat the Whole Person - The body is connected; therefore, treatment is not based solely on one area of the body without looking at what is going on in the entire body.
  • Prevention - preventing disease is imperative, and it starts with education
